Terms of Use

These terms are the agreement between you and the operator of Similect. They explain what the service does, what you may and may not do with it, what happens to the material you publish, and how subscriptions work.

Version 2026-09-30

1. Who we are

Similect is a language-learning service operated by Dmytro Havrylenko. Where these terms say "we" or "us", they mean the operator.

Address: Ballycullane, New Ross, Co.Wexford, Y34CK28, Ireland. Contact: main.office@similect.com, +353874997913.

2. What the service is

Similect helps you learn a language through real material — texts, news, videos, books and exercises — with a dictionary, translations, audio and progress tracking built around them.

It is a learning tool, not a certification body or a translation service. We do not promise any particular learning outcome, exam result or level of fluency.

3. Who may use it

You must be at least 16 years old to create an account. If the law where you live sets a higher age for agreeing to online services on your own, that higher age applies to you.

You may browse a limited amount of public material without an account. Creating an account means you accept these terms.

4. Your account

You sign in through an external provider such as Google, Facebook or Apple, or by confirming your email address. We receive from that provider only what is needed to identify you: your email address, your display name and, if available, your avatar.

One profile can be reached through several sign-in methods, but each account belongs to one profile. You are responsible for keeping access to your sign-in method secure and for everything done through your account.

You may delete your profile at any time in Settings. Deletion is described in the Privacy Policy: the profile is hidden immediately and permanently erased after a grace period, during which you can restore it.

5. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • publish material you have no right to publish, including copyrighted films, books, articles, images or audio;
  • publish content that is illegal where you or your readers are, or that is described as prohibited in our Content Rules;
  • harass, threaten or impersonate other people;
  • scrape, mass-download or resell the service or its material, or use it to train a machine-learning model;
  • interfere with the service, bypass access limits, or use automated tools to create accounts or generate activity;
  • use the service to send spam or advertising.

We may remove content and suspend or close accounts that break these rules. Where we do, we tell you why, and you can appeal — see the Content Rules.

6. Content you publish

What you publish stays yours. You keep every right you had in it.

By publishing, you grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to store, process, display and distribute that material inside the service, and to make the technical copies and derived versions the service needs: text segmentation, translations, audio, video quality levels, thumbnails and previews. The licence exists so the service can show your material; it ends for new uses when you delete the material, though copies may remain in backups for a limited period.

You confirm that you own the material or otherwise have the right to publish it, and that showing it here does not break anyone else's rights.

We do not review everything before it appears. We may remove or restrict material that breaks these terms, the Content Rules or the law.

7. Our material and material from other sources

Part of the catalogue is published by us. We use material that is in the public domain, released under a free licence such as Creative Commons, or licensed to us. Where a licence requires attribution, the source and licence are named on the material.

The service itself — the software, the design, the dictionary, the ratings and the generated exercises — belongs to us. You may use it for learning; you may not copy or resell it.

If you believe something in the catalogue infringes your rights, write to main.office@similect.com. We act on well-founded notices quickly. The Content Rules explain what a notice should contain.

8. Automatically generated content

A significant part of what you see is produced by artificial intelligence: learning texts and stories, news summaries, exercises, cover images, translations, word explanations, transcriptions and synthesised audio, as well as the difficulty level and vocabulary ratings.

Machine-generated material can be wrong. Translations, definitions and grammatical explanations may contain mistakes, and news summaries may misstate facts. Do not rely on it for anything that matters legally, medically or financially, and check anything important against a primary source.

To provide these features we send content — including material you publish — to third-party model providers for processing. The Privacy Policy names them.

9. Free use and subscription

The service has a free tier with daily limits and a paid subscription that removes them and unlocks additional features. What each tier includes is shown in the app and may change; we will not reduce what you have already paid for during a period you have paid.

Subscriptions renew automatically for the same period until you cancel. The price, the period and the renewal date are shown before you pay and in your account.

You can cancel at any time, and cancellation takes effect at the end of the paid period — you keep access until then. Where you bought the subscription decides where you cancel it: subscriptions bought on the website are managed in the billing portal in Settings or in your Link account at link.com; subscriptions bought through the App Store or Google Play are managed and cancelled in that store, and only that store can refund them.

Prices are shown including VAT and other sales taxes where they apply: the amount displayed is the amount charged, though the payment page may show it converted into your local currency. Purchases made through the App Store or Google Play are billed by that store, which handles the tax itself.

Subscriptions bought on the website are sold through Link, a Stripe service, which acts as the merchant of record for the payment: it charges your payment method, calculates and pays the tax, sends receipts and invoices, and appears on your bank statement as LINK.COM* followed by our name. The service itself is provided by us under these terms.

If a payment fails, access may be paused until it succeeds.

10. Right of withdrawal and refunds

If you are a consumer in the European Union or the United Kingdom, you normally have 14 days to withdraw from a distance contract without giving a reason.

A subscription gives you immediate access to digital content. The paywall says so above the price, and by choosing a plan you ask us to start straight away and accept that your right of withdrawal ends once we have. If you would rather keep that right, write to main.office@similect.com before paying and we will arrange it.

This does not affect your statutory rights where the service is faulty. If something is broken or was not delivered, write to main.office@similect.com and we will fix it or refund you.

For a subscription bought on the website you can also contact Link support at support.link.com about a payment or a refund; Link can issue refunds in certain cases within 60 days of the purchase.

Purchases made through the App Store or Google Play follow that store's refund rules, which we cannot override.

Model withdrawal form

You do not have to use this form — any clear statement works — but if you want one, copy the lines below into an e-mail to main.office@similect.com.

  • To: Dmytro Havrylenko, Ballycullane, New Ross, Co.Wexford, Y34CK28, Ireland, main.office@similect.com, +353874997913
  • I hereby give notice that I withdraw from my contract for the provision of the following service:
  • Ordered on:
  • Name of consumer:
  • Address of consumer:
  • Date:

11. Availability and changes

We develop the service continuously: features appear, change and are withdrawn. We do not guarantee uninterrupted availability and may take the service down for maintenance.

If we make a change that materially reduces what a paid subscription includes, we will tell you in advance and you may cancel.

12. Ending the agreement

You may stop using the service and delete your profile at any time.

We may suspend or close an account that repeatedly or seriously breaks these terms, or where we are required to by law. Except where the breach is serious or the law requires otherwise, we will warn you first and give you a chance to put it right. If we close a paid account without cause, we refund the unused part of the period.

13. Liability

The service is provided as it is. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, lost profit or lost data, or for material published by other users.

Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law — including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for your statutory consumer rights.

14. Complaints and disputes

Write to main.office@similect.com first — most things are settled that way. If you are a consumer in the EU and we cannot agree, you can also take the matter to the consumer protection body or the alternative dispute resolution scheme in the country where you live.

These terms are governed by the law of Ireland. If you are a consumer, this does not deprive you of the protection of the mandatory rules of the country where you live, and you may bring proceedings there.

15. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. When a change is material, we show it in the app and ask you to accept the new version before continuing. The date and version of the current text are shown at the top of this page.
